Chapter Thirteen
Preparing for the Deliverance Session
1. Find a suitable place that is private, quiet, and away from any distractions.
2. Set a meeting time and stick to it: Example: Saturday at the Church Warfare Room from 1:00-3:00 p.m.
3. Meet for prayer. Team members should meet previous to the captive’s arrival for prayer and discussion of the captive’s needs.
4. Be prepared to take notes of the teaching and deliverance session. Notes have several purposes:
They enable the team to progress in orderly fashion.
The person delivered may want to know which demons were cast out in order to keep check on these weak areas in case of other attacks.
Records should be kept by team for possible follow up to deliverance, including words of knowledge given to the deliverance workers, evidences of signs of deliverance, unusual behaviors, and any symptoms of distress or anxiety. This information often helps and eases the deliverance.
5. Stay in tune with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit may reveal past situations or specific details or emotions that can unlock negative memories or explain certain behaviors or compulsions, which the captive may have forgotten or may not even have been aware of the circumstances that led to his or her captivity by the enemy.
6. When a snag comes and things seem to stop, go to prayer and worship together. You will see many things surface at once, and sometimes this will unlock the key, opening the door for a speedy deliverance.
Characteristics of a Ministry Team
Each person on the ministry team:
Must be loving and wise
Have a genuine compassion for others
Be willing to go the second mile, turn the other cheek, and forgive “seventy times seven”
Be free from blame and be delivered himself
Must bear one another's burdens
Must keep all things quiet, confidential, and sacred to God.
Must regularly fast and pray
Since their lives will be open to all scrutiny, and those on the ministry team must shine as a mirror and be a clear reflection to others. Nothing can be hidden; God exposes all.
It takes strong people who are spiritually mature to perform this ministry along with much prayer and fasting. When the disciples of Jesus asked Him, “Why could not we cast him out?” Jesus answered, “This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting” (Mark 9:28-29).
Apart from prayer and fasting, the deliverance worker will not develop the spiritual resources adequate for every encounter with the enemy.
The team must constantly pray: “Lord open our eyes that we may discern and make free your people caught in the deception of the enemy. At any cost to ourselves always bind the spirit of deception in every case.
Prayer of Protection & Wisdom For the Deliverance Workers
Heavenly Father, we receive now by faith the protection of your armor that we may stand against Satan and all his host in the Name of Jesus and overcome them. We put on the armor of God according the Ephesians 6:8-10:
We take your truth to counter all the lies and errors of a cunning enemy.
We take your righteousness to overcome the evil thoughts and accusations of Satan.
We take the equipment of the Gospel of Peace and forsake the safety and comforts of life, in order to wage war with the enemy.
Above all we take your faith to bar the way to doubt and unbelief entering our soul.
We take your salvation and trust you to protect our body and soul from Satan's varied attacks.
We take your Word and pray that the Holy Spirit will enable us to use it effectively against the enemy and to sever and deliver every captive of Satan.
In the strong and all conquering Name of Jesus Christ Our Lord, AMEN.
Keep in mind that the degree of manifestation does not reflect on the success or failure of deliverance. In fact, most manifestations are merely shows and distractions of the devil.
Most people spend too much time reacting to what other people have done to them. Check your reactions and bring them under the light of the Holy Spirit, and He will show you how to overcome such reactions.
The Five-fold Path in Christ’s Footsteps:
1. Yielding 3. Dying
2. Emptying 4. Overcoming
5. Complete commitment.
The more highly educated we are, the more vulnerable we are to Satan’s attack through our minds. When you see wrong in someone else’s life and your dislike of that person may be the very thing that needs straightened out and dealt with in your own life.
Be aware of the counterfeit baptism and remember it cannot be cast out until the person refrains from speaking it. Then deal with it.
Remember that mental suggestion is the demonic counterpart to the intercessory prayer of a Christian.
Always pray in the Spirit; it is the safest way. It not only keeps you safe, but it allows the Holy Spirit to pray the right way. It is sometimes dangerous to pray in English because we may exert psychic soul powers toward that person and cause harm to them.
God knew what he was doing when He gave us tongues. It is His safety valve for us to avoid damaging others and ourselves. Remember that the Holy Spirit prays the perfect prayer for the need, and His timing is always perfect and the outcome is always victorious.
You Are Responsible
At all times there must be complete honesty between the team members, or the enemy will have the upper hand, and the person being delivered will suffer the consequences. You, the team or the deliverance worker, is responsible. The captive’s blood will be on your hands, and you will have to account to the Lord for any sin on your part. Be cautious and wait on the Lord to give direction.
The person being delivered must be comfortable, relaxed, and able to trust the team. Anything the captive says should be held in strictest confidence since it is sacred trust. It must be kept as such or the Lord will deal with you harshly.
The spirit of a person is his life in God and must be dealt with gently, lovingly, and with much caution. The team must always be open with one another and keep things clear between themselves. Any discord must be dealt with immediately by talking it out and going to prayer, asking God to give wisdom so the issue can be dealt with God’s way. No pride must enter in or all is lost.
17 Points of Caution for The Deliverance Worker
1. Base everything on God's Word. Don't minister without teaching the captive first.
2. Do everything on scriptural authority and in order.
3. Distinguish between the spiritual and psychological. Soulish responses are of the flesh or our natural self reactions; it is the gap between psychological and spiritual. Psychology is the danger of mixing these.
4. Never counsel the opposite sex alone. No exceptions!
5. Permit no pride nor hurt feelings on your part. This is a privilege for others, not you.
6. You must always forgive even if you are right. If you are wrong, be the first to say you are sorry. This keeps you humble and keeps pride out.
7. Never operate in this ministry alone. Husband and wife teams are best.
8. Make sure the captive understands basic scriptural doctrines: salvation, water baptism, baptism of the Holy Spirit. Lack of knowledge in these areas is often the reason many captives open the door to the enemy’s attacks.
9. Make sure the captive understands his own deliverance and the “why, where, and what” that led to his capture so he can avoid becoming ensnared again.
10. Laying on of hands is scriptural in deliverance in some instances (Mk. 8:25; Lk. 13:13; Lk. 4:40).
11. Make sure they always keep their heads up and look into the eyes of the team or those ministering.
12. Make the demons name themselves; in this case you have more control and authority (Mk. 1:23,26; Mk. 3:11; Mk 9:25,26).
13. If deliverance is not achieved, check all points. You have a legitimate right to command the demons, and they must go for the Spirit of the Lord is Jesus.
14. Let God send those to whom you minister. You can’t solicit people.
15. Minister to children in the presence of at least one parent. Jesus did not minister to children unless one or both of the parents were exercising faith for the child.
16. Don't get diverted arguing theology. Evil spirits will do anything to distract the deliverance process. Don't be deceived or fooled; the Holy Spirit prompts and urges gently.
17. Exercise patience and reassurance. Be sensitive and discreet. Use God’s comfort; do not rush. The person must relax and allow the Holy Spirit time to work.
Guarding Your Heart and Mind
Deliverance workers should carefully watch over these areas of their lives:
1. Emotions 3. Relationships
2. Attitudes 4. Reactions
Since defeat always begins in the mind, you must keep a constant guard over any negative personal behavior or attitude.
The following iniquities can no longer be tolerated in the personal lives of the deliverance worker: resentment, bitterness, hatred.
Remember you are the recipient of the consequences of such attitudes and behaviors. Get rid of them and keep in an attitude of continual forgiveness and humility in all things.
Any unforgiveness in you may hinder another’s deliverance and soil your own soul. Keep yourself filled with the Word, with your prayer language, with worship and fellowship.
Husbands, fathers, and men, you must have authority and discipline in your lives and in your homes. By nature you may have a nasty temper. Discipline it and overcome it. If you do not discipline it, you open yourself to a demon of anger.
